Magazine Features as a Means to Promote Your Business

by Stefan Drew of Stefan Drew Associates

Media releases can lead to stories in newspapers or magazines as well as magazine features.   Features can focus on a range of topics subject to the magazine’s remit and the editor’s whim.  For example the topic might be gardening or be part of a series of articles on home decoration, ….. in fact it might be about almost anything.

In some cases it is quite difficult to find a way to “promote” an organisation or product via features as the magazines wants a feature and you will want to promote a service or product.  This was the case when I was requested to promote an independent girls’ school.  Written purely about the school the feature would have been a poorly veiled advert and would not have fitted the magazine’s ethos.

However when based around one of the school's employees who had recently been awarded the Arctic Emblem for convey duties during the last war and, at the age of 81, was still working the feature became interesting and newsworthy. The story was published over two full pages of the magazine, at no cost to my client and, by using a large photograph, which included the school sign, promoted the organisation far better than an expensive advert is ever likely to do.
